Lefty Ray's Saltwater Jetty & Tarpon Flies

"Spanish Macarena"
This is my top jetty fly. It sinks fast and brings vicious strikes. The pattern is in Gregg Burlocher's book "Texas Saltwater Classics." The only difference is that I am now using a Daiichi circle hook (1/0, D85Z). This fly is NOT very durable so take a bunch with you. When setting the hook, do NOT raise the rod. Keep the rod low and either let the fish create tension on your rod or keep stripping with the rod low. Raising the rod will lose the fish EVERY time. Spanish Mackerel find this fly very attractive. I custom tie these, minimum 1 dozen per order. Email me for the fly pattern recipe, Spanish Macarena Pattern This fly was feature in Southwest Fly Fishing magazine.

 "La Buena"
In essence this is a black over white Clouser. When all else fails and things are slow, i will throw this one at the pin perch and piggy perch. For some reason the huge jacks that are found at the jetties like this fly too. Overall it is a small fly (size 6 or 8) hook. Might be available at fly shops.

Coastal Conehead Fly Series

The numbers of Tarpon off of the Texas coast is increasing and so are the numbers of flies that are used to jump them. The Coastal Conehead series are common and custom fly patterns that include a large heavy metal conehead to get them down fast. Minimum 6 per pattern.

CC Tarpon Bunny

Larry Haines at "The Shop" in Port Isabel can attest to this flies effectiveness. Originally tied with dumbbell eyes but the slim coneheads make it easier to cast.
